I hate saying goodnight--in English--when talking to people. I don't know why. I actually recognized this aversion while on my mission in Brazil. I wouldn't saying "boa noite" to my companions before they'd drop off to sleep. I'd usually just say "tchau." I accept that this is weird. But I still don't say "good night" to my roommates now, or at least rarely, even if they're wishing me sweet dreams. And when I do say "good night" before they're off to bed, I feel all queasy inside. Now if people are leaving my apartment and I say a full sentence like, "Have a good night," this is okay, because it's buffered by other words. I think it might also have something to do with the lack of immediacy of sleep.
Go ahead. Psychoanalyze that.

It's a good thing we were never roommates because I would have been offended by you not saying goodnight to me! I would have been offended, you know, hard core...
I am unfortunately to the point where I only say "night night" in a high-pitched voice. I need to remember not to say that to adults. I also have to concentrate in order to remember that I shouldn't tell adults that I'm going to go "shi shi" in the "potty".
I had a Spaniard companion who taught me this one:
"Que suenes con los angelitos...
"Pero no los toqueis
(Sleep with the angels...but don't touch them!) Sorry it comes out weird without the accents and such.
hmmm, maybe it is not a goodnight because you never really go to bed!
