I think my pouting is valid

If you find out that a guy that you not only harbored a crush for, but had kinda fallen in love with, has gotten engaged, I think pouting is not only allowed, it the prescribed course of action. hmmmmmph.

Good thing my sister gave me an early birthday present: TRIBBLE SLIPPERS!!!!

docs

I like to think of Star Trek as documentaries from the future, in case anyone was wondering.

Latest in Awkward Signage

Maybe the people who make the UVU signs get what's going on. Or maybe they're all about post-modern shock value? I dunno. But I really don't get how Star Trek relates. Am I missing something?

My Birthday Card

Part 1:
I have a tendency to leave errrrr... goofy pictures of Tom Jones and The Hoff in a coworker's office and office drawers, just for funsies, you know. I even had her convinced that the Germans celebrated something called Hoffmas, which occurs during the fortnight 90 to 75 days before Easter.

Part 2:
Sting just released a great album called Symphonicities. I told my boss about the album, and I also happened to mention that I thought Sting was rather sexy.

Part 3:
I get to work today and, after a while, I open up my drawer and see this, which had me belly laughing, in tears for about 3 minutes before I regained my composure:

Sting as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune
If you don't know what this picture comes from, you are very lucky. Dune is a terrible, terrible movie. Here are some clips to show you just how wonderful it is.

Part 4:
The best part of Dune? Captain Picard with a bald mullet.

Darmok and Chile at Tanagra

I have written some nerdy posts in my time, but this very well might take the cake.

For a while now I've thought about Chilean Spanish and how it's so hard for me to understand. A big reason for this is all of the sayings they use. I mean, it's like insanely impossible to catch what they're saying sometimes, ¿cachai?

It often reminds me of this episode of Star Trek where the aliens du jour speak to each other in metaphors and sayings making the universal translator practically useless until, of course, Picard deciphers the metaphors.

Yes, this is what Chilean Spanish has reminded me of for years and years.
Me and Chilean Spanish = Shaka, when the walls fell.

Proving your point with the title

So I saw this paper recently. This is the title, I kid you not: Cannibis in the life's of many
I mean, talk about proving cannibis' negative effects in one fell swoop.

So far my favorite sentence is "In the end I chose an article that is looking for the effects that cannabis has in the body and mind."

I think I liked it so much because it reminded me of Star Trek 6 when Uhura and the crew are frantically trying to tell some Klingons over the comm that they're going to Rura Penthe and that they're really a Klingon ship from the home world. They totally botch the language, just like the paper title and the sentence copied above.

So, to translate what's in the video clip:
In Klingon we hear (What ship is that? Over...)
Uhura finally responds in Klingon with a stuttering: (We art thy freighter... URSVA six...weeks out of Kronos... Over...)
Then they hear: (Whither are you bound? Over...)
Finally they respond with: (We art delivering food... things ...  and...supplies to Rura Penthe... over...)

I think I like most things that remind me of Star Trek.
And who knew Klingon was so Shakespearean? I mean, "Whiter are you bound"?? Chancellor Gorkon knew, that's who. And doesn't Gorkon sound just like the Master Control Program from Tron? Well, he should.

I have been sorely remiss...

I've barely blogged lately. There are myriad reasons for that, and a lot of them have to do with another project that sucked all the hours out of my day (we're talking 3 hrs of sleep a night/early morning).
Lots of ideas had been floating in my head of what I should post, but I realized that Jarede has mentioned twice that I should be doing a Star Trek review. He's right. I should've done this forever ago.

I went to the IMAX with Andy to see the movie in HD glory. The movie was amazing that way, I'll admit. I was often wowed.
The best part of the opening sequences was when Young Kirk put on Sabotage in the (recently stolen) car's stereo:

This sequence leads to one of the overarching themes of the movie: hanging off cliffs and ledges. This seems to happen at a frequency of every 7.8 hours of a human's life. Okay, I'm being a hoser, but it happened all the time in the movie.

The movie had good action sequences and stuff. Some funny-ish introductions of characters like Scotty. Spock sorta brooded well. Kirk was, you know, lascivious and reckless. Uhura? Meh. Anyway, I could go on, but won't.

But the real trick is in the villain: a Romulan who got the terrible shaft and thus blames a major Star Trek character for all his ills. In order to avenge himself he decides he wants to cause Major Star Trek Character pain by destroying his homeworld with a terrible weapon. This can be seen in this clip/trailer:
Oh, wait, I meant this:

It was like Star Trek Nemesis all over again.
Sorry, I'm a bit snarky, but seriously? The same plot?

Star Trek 11 happens in an alternate universe so that they can play with the facts, mold things how they want. I just didn't see the need for it. Whatever. People died that shouldn't have. People hooked up who never had. Blah Blah

The movie was good as movies go, but with all of the background (wait? futureground?), they didn't do a very good job. Sigh...

And I was totally sick of people hanging off cliffs/ledges.

I guess I'm too much of a trekkie.
And I think this sums up my feelings of Star Trek:
