a gum wrapper and a match (in portuguese)

One day I was walking up a street during my mission and there was a couple with their two sons walking toward us. Perfect street contact. I walked up to them and introduced myself. I asked them their names and the dad said his name was João Batista, his wife was Maria, their sons was José and their other son was Macguyver.

I met a bunch of people with interesting names--usually from South America. Spaniards aren't that into creative naming. I met a woman named 'Deisy Duke' one time, and a family I taught had kids named Leidy and Grover.

There was a guy in a ward I was in named Jesus Alcazar, and the missionaries would giggle about it because in English that means "Jesus Fortress" Sounds like a bad heavy metal band.

Deisy Duke? hahahahah Awesome.

Sometimes it was the everyday names in Portuguese that got me. Maria das Dores and, of course, Maria da Conceição. Hey Pains and Conception. I mean, what on earth.

I knew a Deisi on my mission and a (white) kid from my home ward named his son Macguyver. I also knew a José Cuervo on my mission, and at one point I even tricked my companion into thinking that a guy named Ramón's first name was actually Jamón. I thought she knew it was a joke until we got up to the door and she asked if Jamón Serrano was at home. And my trainer's name was María del Refugio Navarrete.

Am I the only one who had this pop into his head?
